The local observatory of the Syndicat d'Agglomération Nouvelle du Nord-Ouest de l'Etang de Berre (Fos-Istres-Miramas) regularly published an analysis of the offers received from nine local employment agencies (ANPE) in the Bouches du Rhône Department (Istres/Martigues/Arles/Vitrolles/Marignane/Salon-de-Provence/Marseille Ste Marthe/Marseille Les Caillols/Marseille Dromel).

The situation described below concerns the offers received from January to June 2002 emanating from the transport and logistics professionals.

In introduction, it should be pointed out that the transport and logistics sector arrives in 4th position in the number of employment offers, after those concerning

  • 1. distribution and sales
  • 2. the hotel industry
  • 3. the administrativeand commercial services

Representativity :
The transport and logistics sector represents 9,10% of the total offer.
The ANPE provides a practically similar rate, 9,5% in the PACA region and 9,6% in the Bouches du Rhône department.

Localisation :
The employment offers concerning the transport and logistics professions are to be found more particularly in the Salon de Provence (20,7%) and the Etang de Berre (20,1%) areas. It transpires that 12,4% of the offers in this domain are located in the territory of the SAN (Fos-Istres-Miramas).

Types of contracts :
The transport-logistique activity has registered more than half of the fixed term contracts, 69% of which 14,6% temporary employment contracts.

Qualifications :
60% of the offers in this specific sector require a qualification. It should be noted that these offers are relatively difficult to satisfy (5 weeks posting on average).

Main professions required :

  • goods storage and distribution agent (29,9%)
  • clerk of works (23,6%)
  • load handling and storage agent (19,4%)

In decreasing order the other offers, over the last 6 months, concern the following professions :

driver - deliveryman 56 offers
construction site vehicle driver 45 offers
private vehicle driver 38 offers
public service vehicle 36 offers
fork lift truck driver 15 offers

Generally, the studies and analyses show an evolution in the number of persons employed in the region by transport and logistics companies over the past 10 years. This evolution was particularly strong during the first period (1990-1994) for companies in the handling industry. On the other hand, employment in activiries linked to transport has evolved more during the second period (1994-2000).
